What Is Ketamine Therapy?

Medical professionals first discovered and verified ketamine's medical applications in 1962, using it in hospitals for procedures. Today, ketamine is a research-backed medication that provides a fast path to relief from fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, and complex regional pain for patients who have not responded to traditional treatments.

How Ketamine Therapy Treats Chronic Pain

Ketamine triggers reactions in the cortex that enable brain connections to regrow. This reaction makes the brain more adaptable and able to create new pathways and help patients develop more positive thoughts and, as a result, behaviors.

  • Potential Side Effects

Ketamine, an injectable drug for severe anxiety, has potential side effects. Ketamine infusions can cause nausea, vomiting, high blood pressure, or perceptual disturbances such as highly vivid colors, textures, noises, a slowed perception of time, and sounds perceived as more muffled than usual. If taken in higher doses, they could also lead to perceived blindnesses, jerkiness, feeling like you're floating around space, seeing things from different perspectives, confusion, intense feelings, a sense of self-awareness, dissociation, and a personality shift.

  • Understanding the Different Types of Ketamine

To understand the different kinds of ketamine, it is essential first to understand enantiomers. Enantiomers are reflective images of one another. They are similar but aren’t identical. A pair of enantiomers is called a stereoisomer.

Ketamine comprises two enantiomers; (S)-ketamine and (R)-ketamine. When paired, they compose a stereoisomer. Ketamine IV infusions, or Racemic ketamine, offer the full stereoisomer. The intranasal spray Sprovato offers (S)-ketamine.

  • Determining Which Option Is for You

You may be asking yourself which option is the best fit for you. Both kinds of ketamine work effectively, and no conclusive studies demonstrate one enantiomer to be better. Many healthcare professionals consider ketamine IV infusions superior because:

    • The method offers 100% bioavailability
    • Treatment may be stopped at any time
    • The dosage can be easily adjusted
    • It allows for a minimal effective dose (the least possible amount of medication for the most potential benefits)
    • The practitioner is aware of the exact amount going into the patient’s system

The healthcare provider will prescribe the optimal treatment for you. The ideal dosage will be based on your weight in kilograms and begin at the lowest possible dosage. Follow-up treatments will likely increase the dosage until you reach the minimal effective dose.

Treatment Scheduling and Costs

Canyon Pain and Wellness's pain protocol typically consists of at least three infusions, depending on your pain syndrome, administered once or twice weekly. Additional Infusion FAQs

  • How Long do Infusions Take?

The length of the infusion depends on the content and the procedure. Some may take as little as thirty minutes; others take as much as four hours.

  • How Does Ketamine Work In the Brain?

Ketamine works by blocking specific pain receptors in your brain. At the same time, it resets some of the nerve cells in your brain and spine. This interaction makes ketamine more effective at reducing some types of pain than traditional treatments.

  • What Is Treatment Like?

Canyon Pain and Wellness will provide the ketamine infusion on-site in our office through an intravenous (IV) line. Treatment usually takes 30 minutes to three hours, depending on the condition.

  • How Long do They Take to Treat Chronic Pain?

Patients typically report relief during or after their first session. You can expect more sustained relief after two to three sessions.

  • Are There Any Negative Side Effects?

There are no known long-term side effects to ketamine therapies, and the short-term effects are well tolerated and usually dissipate within a day.

  • Does Insurance Cover Ketamine Treatments?

Some insurance companies will pre-qualify you for treatments. Please check with us to see if you qualify. If paying cash, ask for our special pricing.
