Relieve Chronic Pain From Nerves, Muscles, and Tissues

Canyon Pain and Wellness is your home for expert interventional pain management. Pain generally comes from the inflammation or irritation of nerve fibers that send pain signals to the brain. Pain management aims at minimizing pain and its adverse effects while allowing maximum patient quality of life.

Medications used in pain management may be injected directly into inflamed or injured tissues (intra-articular injections) or taken orally (pills). Professionals can also administer this medication intravenously, also known as our IV therapy in Glendale, AZ, which can be done at Canyon Pain and Wellness. Also, some medicines can help reduce swelling and control blood pressure during a procedure. An example is using a local anesthetic before inserting a needle. This anesthetic minimizes the discomfort and pain felt by the patient.

Interventional pain management techniques that employ epidural injections for treating lower back and leg pain are effective in randomized trials. Infusion rates of local anesthetics and long-acting steroids can reduce symptoms for a prolonged period (up to one year). Interventional treatments for low back and leg pain include:

  • Radiofrequency denervation treats pain resulting from muscle, nerve, and tendon conditions. The affected body area is typically numbed with a local anesthetic before radiofrequency probes are inserted into or around the targeted tissue. The probes then emit energy that damages these tissues in order to stop them from sending pain signals to your brain.
  • Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) for chronic back pain has been shown to be effective in randomized trials at up to 10 years of follow-up. SCS involves implanting electrodes deep within the spinal canal (epidurally) or around the spinal cord at specific locations. These electrodes act like "pacemakers" for the spinal cord, producing electrical signals that block pain.
  • Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) for treating chronic pain of the trunk and limbs is usually done with a temporary trial system first. During this test period, the patient has an electrode placed on each side of the spine and follows up with doctor visits every two weeks during the trial to make adjustments to stimulate either more or fewer nerve fibers. Patients may feel numbness, tingling, or localized pain after PNS implantation, but most experience relief from their chronic pain. Pain relief may be short-lasting (a few weeks) if electrodes are positioned poorly. Often patients will need several tests to find the best way for treatment.
  • Direct nerve stimulation (DNS) for chronic pain is done by placing electrodes next to the nerves that carry pain signals up to the brain. Current or electrical pulses are sent through these electrodes, which blocks the pain signal from getting to your brain.
  • Intravenous Infusion Therapy (IVIT) decreases chronic pain and provides other general therapeutic benefits. It is achieved by injecting medicines directly into the body's venous system via a vein in the arm or hand. IVIT has been used for many years to treat certain medical conditions such as cancer, heart failure, and arthritis. Today, more doctors are discovering how ketamine can be administered intravenously to help reduce inflammation and relieve pain in patients with acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. The medical team here is fantastic! It was the best care I think I have ever received. Tony was so precise and accommodating throughout the therapy that I look forward to returning—truly a great experience and results from someone who has had a lifelong battle with depression and anxiety.
